It takes only two and a half hours one way by car and can be a day trip from Bangkok.

Erawan Waterfall, said to be the most beautiful waterfall in Thailand, and the thrilling row of cars through the cliffs, are some of the unique experiences that can only be had in Kanchanaburi, a place rich in nature.

This time, I actually took a day trip from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi!

It was a lot of fun and I wanted to go back, so I’ll summarize the sights and experiences.

★KKday’s car charter is a great way to get to Kanchanaburi. If you haven’t decided how to get there, please refer to this article! →From Bangkok! Private car charter for a day in Kanchanaburi.

tourist attraction

Kanchanaburi is said to be Thailand’s natural treasure trove, a place where so much beautiful nature remains.

Erawan Waterfall, the most beautiful waterfall in Thailand

This is the most recommended tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi.

It is said to be the most beautiful waterfall in Thailand, and I have never seen such a beautiful waterfall before. .

Not only is the crystal clear water beautiful, but you can swim freely in this waterfall.

The time spent swimming in the beautiful water surrounded by nature is very special.

A thrilling ride along a cliff! Riding on the Burma-Thailand Railway

Many of you may have seen pictures of trains running along the cliffs.

Tourists can also ride on this train, which is called the Burma-Thailand Railway.

I actually rode the train myself, and it was very powerful! .

Why not try a thrilling experience that you cannot have in Japan?

Kway River Railroad Bridge, the setting for the famous movie “Bridge to the Battlefield”

The reason why the Burma-Thailand Railway became so famous was because of the movie “Bridge to the Battlefield”.

The movie, about the deaths of many Western prisoners of war involved in the construction of the railroad, was a worldwide hit.

The most famous scene in the movie takes place on this railway bridge on the River Kwai. .

The bridge is actually still used by trains, so you can see the full force of the trains when they are passing by.

In addition, although we were not able to go this time, Kanchanaburi has the following sightseeing spots.

・Elephant rides across the river.
・Wat Kaopoon with its mysterious caves.
・Moan village where people live a simple, old-fashioned life.

Elephant rides seem to be particularly popular.

You can’t experience elephant riding in Bangkok, you have to go to Ayutthaya, but it’s just a short walk along the roadside.

In Kanchanaburi, it seems that you can experience elephant river rides with them.

To get to Kanchanaburi, car charter is recommended

If you want to go to Kanchanaburi on a day trip, car charter is the way to go.

It takes almost 5 hours one way to go from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi by train.

With five hours each way, it is impossible to make a day trip.

You can also take a bus to Kanchanaburi, but it is more convenient to travel by car between tourist spots in Kanchanaburi.

With a car charter, you can visit many tourist spots efficiently.

There are also local optional tours, but if there are more than two people, the price is the same as the car charter price

There are group tours that go to Kanchanaburi, but the price is usually $60 to $80 per person.

Car charter can be done for about $150 per car, so I felt that car charter is more cost-effective for more than two people.

I also made my reservation on the website KKday.

KKday offers local tours to over 80 countries around the world and can be booked cheaper than other sites.

The site is especially strong in Asia, so I use KKday to book my local tours in Thailand.

There are also group tours, but I recommend car chartering, which allows you to go around freely!

[My experience] Short trip from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi on a day trip!

We actually went to Kanchanaburi as a day trip from Bangkok.

Here is a report of our experience, with actual photos.

7:00 Departure from the hotel

We were picked up from our hotel at 7:00am. The driver arrived before our meeting time.

I told the driver in advance the name of my hotel and the spots I wanted to visit on the day.

The van we had booked was quite clean and the seats were soft. 2.5 hours of travel was not hard at all!

9:30 Arrive at the River Kwai Railroad Bridge and explore at your leisure

After a restroom break, we arrived at the railway bridge of the River Kwai, two and a half hours after our departure.

This railway bridge is free to walk on.

There is also a space to the side for trains to pass by.

It is an iron bridge now, but when it was first built, it was made of wooden planks joined together. When I think that these are boards, I’m scared that I might fall off…

The railway bridge is a sight to behold, but looking around, I saw beautiful nature.

I think that seeing this beautiful nature is one of the best parts of coming to Kanchanaburi.

Around 10:30, we boarded the car again and left. Next stop is Erawan Waterfall.

11:45 Arrive at Erawan Falls & have lunch

The waterfall is located in Erawan National Park.

It was lunch time and we decided to have lunch at a cafe at the entrance of the park.

I ordered a strawberry soda and a hamburger.

The patties are firm and the fries are crispy.

We were able to fill up on a delicious lunch.

I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to eat lunch in a clean place, so I’m glad there was a cafe!

13:20 Finally to Erawan Falls

After finishing our lunch, we finally entered the park. The entrance fee is 200 baht ($7.03) per person.

Surprised to see this park is pretty big!

There are a total of seven waterfalls in Erawan. There are 7 levels from 1 to 7.

The park is open for free trekking, so we proceeded on foot.

The lower part of the path was beautifully paved and we felt safe to proceed.

13:30 Swimming at the waterfall in crystal clear Erawan

As we continued on our way, we saw the waterfall. Too beautiful…!

I was amazed at how beautiful it was, far beyond my imagination.

The colors are enchanting.

This waterfall has a swimming area, so I changed into my swimsuit and enjoyed swimming.

Really beautiful… I couldn’t make it to the level 7 waterfall this time due to time constraints, but definitely a place I want to come back to!

15:30 Depart Erawan Waterfall to the station to board the Burma-Thailand Railway

Leaving Erawan Waterfall, we came to a station called Wang Pho, where we boarded the Burma-Thailand Railway.

At the ticket counter, tell them which train you want to take and buy a ticket.

We will take the train that departs from Wang Po at 15:58 and arrives at Kanchanaburi at 17:37.

The fare is 100 baht ($3.52) per person.

We told the van driver our arrival station and time to meet us.

16:00 Finally board the train

The long-awaited train arrived. We get on it as soon as possible.

The train has no windows and no air conditioning.

Next to me are some local girls.

Apparently, they ride to school every day.

16:20 Thrilling! Going through a cliff

After relaxing a bit, we quickly came to a spot of a big river.

Crossing the river is a powerful experience!

And now it’s time to go through the cliff.

There are no window panes, so everyone leans back to enjoy the view.

I’m afraid I can’t do that…

The train continues on for a while after that.

The view from the window was all peaceful.

17:40 Arrive Kanchanaburi, depart for Bangkok

We pass the railway bridge we walked in the morning, this time on a train. There were so many people watching by the train!

We got off the train at Kanchanaburi station and safely met up with the van driver.

We are now on our way to Bangkok.

20:00 Arrive in Bangkok

We got caught in a bit of a traffic jam on the way back. There are often traffic jams in the evening near the center of Bangkok.

Originally we were going to be dropped off at our hotel, but when we told them we wanted to go to Terminal 21 for dinner, they were happy to accommodate us.

The car was quite comfortable and the driver was kind and satisfied with the tour.

Kkday is the best place to book a car charter & tour

The site we booked this time is KKday, a website that handles local tours around the world.

It offers tours to over 80 countries, and they have a wide variety of tours and are cheap.

I couldn’t find a plan to book a car charter on any other site.

Please check out the recommended KKday tours below.

Points to keep in mind when going to Kanchanaburi

Be sure to bring insect repellents

Kanchanaburi is a place of great nature compared to Bangkok.

Be sure to bring your own insect repellent.

If you get bitten by a mosquito in Thailand, you may be at risk of contracting dengue fever.

Make a schedule with plenty of time

If you are going to go by car charter, make sure to schedule your trip with plenty of time to spare.

Especially when passing through the roads near the center of Bangkok, traffic jams may delay your arrival.

Also, when chartering a car, make a note of the places you want to visit in advance.

This will help you communicate with the driver on the day.

Be sure to take out overseas travel insurance

Kanchanaburi has a lot of nature and is different from how you would spend your time in the city of Bangkok.

Be sure to take out travel insurance in case you get injured or sick.

Enjoy the beautiful nature of Thailand in Kanchanaburi

After visiting Kanchanaburi this time, I was captivated by the beauty of Thai nature beyond my imagination.

I’ve grown to love Kanchanaburi, and I think I’ll stay there next time.

I’d recommend this place to anyone who’s thinking of taking a short trip out of Bangkok!

Have a nice trip!
